The Glycol Measurement Challenge
Glycol is commonly used to prevent heat transfer fluids from freezing in heating, cooling, and air conditioning systems. It is typically found in systems where pipework is exposed to the exterior environment – rooftop units, free cooling, cooling towers – and also in green energy applications, such as solar thermal collectors. Glycol may also be used in district cooling systems – for example, in high rise properties – and low temperature energy networks serving a number of customers. However, the addition of glycol into any system can result in large errors in thermal energy measurement when using a meter intended for water alone.

Code Required Testing of Life Safety Dampers
Building codes require the installation of life safety dampers for several purposes. Most are used to prevent the spread of heat, fire, and/or smoke in a life-threatening event. There are four essential types of life safety dampers: ceiling radiation, fire, smoke, combination fire and smoke. With three general applications, compartmentation to prevent heat, fire or smoke transfer across barriers, smoke control systems to prevent smoke movement within spaces or exhaust to the outside, and fire extinguishing or evacuation systems. Depending on the application, they have varying requirements for periodic testing.

Why is it necessary to monitor CO2 concentration in buildings?
Controlling and monitoring indoor levels of carbon dioxide is essential for everyone’s health, safety, and the energy efficiency of buildings. Similar to how we need to breathe fresh air, so do buildings. Ventilation in a building is the essential process of replacing stale air with fresh air. Without engineered ventilation, buildings become susceptible to stagnant air, mold, bacteria, and potentially harmful gasses like radon, VOCs (volatile organic compounds), and carbon dioxide. Prolonged exposure to these elements can lead to “sick building syndrome” where occupants experience acute health and comfort effects. There are many different methods to bring fresh air into a building. A cost-effective way is to bring fresh air in only when needed using a CO2 duct sensor within the HVAC system.

What’s New – Belimo Dual Channel CO2/Temperature Sensor
This sensor has a range of 5,000 ppm, and the dual-channel technology measures two wavelengths split from a single light source. The sensor automatically takes a reading using the reference channel. Any change in the measurement indicates a change in the optics of the sensor. The sensors automatically adjust the CO2 measurement when a change is detected to prevent drift. Manual calibration is not needed.

Air pressure is the weight of air molecules pressing down onto the earth and objects. (refer to Figure 1). For instance, cool air molecules are heavier and denser causing the force applied to a structure to be greater while warm air molecules are lighter and have lesser force on the building. There are other complicating factors such as wind, weather and seasonal changes, which will also produce variations in pressure.

Bei der Herstellung von Ventilen und Antrieben beschränkt sich Belimo auf die Montage. Die Einzelteile stammen von Lieferanten. Das steigert Belimos Rendite, setzt aber auch ein ausgefeiltes Risikomanagement voraus.

Lars van der Haegen: Mit viel Herzblut
Der Chef von Belimo liebt nicht nur das Unternehmen, sondern auch das Reisen.
Er hat das Amt als CEO von Belimo aus «Liebe zum Unternehmen» übernommen – und natürlich auch, weil ihn die Führungsaufgabe reizt. Seit dem 1. Juli 2015 führt Lars van der Haegen die operativen Geschicke der Herstellerin von Antriebslösungen für Heizungs- und Klimaanlagen. Der 48-jährige Schweizer mit belgischen Vorfahren fühlt sich wohl im Job, er würde diesen Schritt wieder machen. Man darf vermuten, dass der VR von Belimo die Wahl auch wieder so treffen würde: Der Aktienkurs ist seit der Amtsübernahme van der Haegens gut 40% gestiegen.
