Success Story Kainuu Central Hospital, Finland
Belimo valves key to efficient phased commissioning
Caverion implemented the hospital and building systems for the new Kainuu Central Hospital, utilizing products from Belimo, among others. Finland’s first hospital project executed under the alliance model was completed in phases, with the final section finished in 2021.
“We were able to influence the solutions for this project already during the planning phase. With our product choices, we steered the project in a life-cycle friendly and phased commissioning direction. To enable the hospital to be commissioned as quickly as possible, we selected Belimo’s innovative valves for the site. The cooperation with Belimo went smoothly from planning to implementation,” says Timo Malinen, Project Manager at Caverion.

Years of cooperation bear fruit
Caverion and Belimo have been working closely together for many years. The new hospital in Kainuu was a major alliance project, the design of which involved careful mapping of different options and the challenges of the site. Belimo’s products were chosen because they aligned with the project’s high standards and supported the phased commissioning of the hospital.
“Again, Belimo was able to provide us with valuable information to support our decision making. The guiding idea behind the design of the new hospital in Kainuu was the Smart Hospital concept, i.e. our aim was to achieve a high-quality overall solution with low lifecycle costs. Belimo’s pressure-independent valves support this goal perfectly; they are energy-efficient and they allow for more efficient control of water flows with less effort,” Timo explains.
On site, we have been able to take full advantage of the products’ intelligence, which has reduced errors and extra work.

Belimo’s solutions are key to keeping the hospital running
Belimo supplied several hundred pressure-independent 6-way and 2-way valves, energy valves and damper actuators. These valves have played a key role in enabling the phased commissioning of the hospital.
“On site, we have been able to take full advantage of the products’ intelligence, which has reduced errors and extra work. The pressure-independent valves have been very useful in facilitating the expression of the network during expansions. Belimo’s 6-way valves can identify where air removal is needed. Additionally, thanks to these valves, we can remotely adjust the preset values for the water flows used in heating and cooling from the building automation system, meaning we don’t need to disrupt the hospital staff with maintenance work,” Timo explains.
Reliable and long-lasting products win praise
The project for the new hospital in Kainuu has been a complex and demanding project, where high quality requirements and a tight schedule have posed particular challenges for the implementation of building services engineering. With Belimo’s products, Caverion has been able to meet these challenges efficiently and reliably. Leading building systems expert Mikko Myyryläinen has also been pleased with Belimo’s solutions.
“Belimo has been a reliable partner for me since the early 90s. Our cooperation is fruitful and their products are reliable. They proactively introduce new products to us and we test them in our own test environment before taking them to the customer. We have a strong trust in each other, and Belimo reacts quickly and supports us even in unexpected situations,” says Myyryläinen.
