As the foundation for Building Tomorrow, Belimo conducted a series of global workshops with industry experts, complemented by secondary research, to identify the megatrends that will shape the building and HVAC sector over the next 25 years. These megatrends include global warming, the growth of green technologies, demographic shifts, urbanization, health and well-being, safety, individualization, the rise of China and India, talent scarcity, artificial intelligence, digitalization and connectivity, and cybersecurity.
From these broad forces, Belimo outlines specific HVAC industry trends that will affect how commercial buildings are planned, operated, and maintained over the next quarter century.
Four Dimensions of Transformation
The Building Tomorrow study organizes its findings into four thematic areas: environment, society, economy, and technology. Each dimension highlights different challenges and opportunities for the heating and cooling industry, particularly for HVAC companies driving innovation in this space.
Belimo emphasizes that HVAC systems will need to integrate more closely with other building automation platforms, enabling flexible responses to extreme weather and providing better protection for occupants. Field devices must become more robust to withstand continuous stress caused by climate change. Commercial HVAC systems will also need to adapt in real time as spaces are repurposed, while growing sustainability reporting requirements demand transparent, measurable data on energy use and environmental impact. The use of bio-based and recyclable materials will also play a greater role in reducing emissions from construction, operation, and demolition.
